Looking For Friends In All The Wrong Places

I noticed I had a new follower when I logged on this morning. Like everyone, I'm always excited to meet new people in the blogosphere and will almost always follow back. I'm not sure what criteria you use when deciding to join another blog. If it's about sheer numbers, then I guess any ol' blog will do.

Some people have very specific interests (like mountain-climbing or stock-car racing) that aren't of interest to me. Can't see myself randomly joining a bowling enthusiast's blog just for the sake of picking up a new Jewel either. Often though, it's more about the feeling or impression I immediately get when I first open their page, than the content. Humour is an important quality that jumps out at me right away. So is love of family, friendship, furry animals ---- and fully-clothed individuals...!! 

Imagine my surprise when I tracked back to my new follower's blog. I suppose my first indication should have been the content warning, but I plunged in anyways, silly me. My bad - and oh my eyes!!! Wasn't ready for that. X-rated for sure. And disgusting to boot.

While I don't consider myself a prude, I would like to think a quick glance at my content would be all the information someone with an x-rated blog trolling for new followers would need to determine we're not 'into' the same things. 

I'm not sure if it was the kid's books, those ridiculous knitted mitts from a few days ago or perhaps this pic of my first poppy of the season I posted way back in July, but something must have indicated we shared some common interests. Or maybe it's simply that this guy has a complete lack of common sense. Either way, I feel quite insulted. So thanks but no thanks, buddy. 

The (Big) Kid in Me

I was recently given the Leibster award by Rachael over at Letters from a Mermaid. Although I do appreciate it, I'm not going to follow through on all the requirements of the award - instead I thought I'd just share one random secret about myself with you:

I'm still a big kid!

(and suspect many of you are as well :)

To get myself through the winter, I tend to read and watch a lot of movies. After sci-fi and fantasy, my favourite genre is the Children/Young Adults section. Whenever I find myself at Goodwill (which is quite often) a certain portion of my time there is spent perusing the kid's books.

         

I've either recently read, am reading or plan to read the above.

I've watched these movies in the past few weeks and each was a visual delight. 

I think it's important remain childlike (though not childish ;) throughout our lives. Children's literature and movies help me to stay in touch with the magical, whimsical and fantastical possibilities in life as seen through more innocent, wondering eyes.

Pet Peeves

If you're in North America, you've (likely) very easily deciphered what's on my 'To Do' list! The modern trend of shortening company titles is one of my favourite pet peeves. For some unknown reason, I find businesses getting all trendy with their names extremely lame and annoying - even though I am obviously lazy enough to fall in line myself!

I distinctly remember snorting in derision when The Royal Bank and Boston Pizza started referring to themselves as RBC and BP's in commercials. For a while there (a few years ago now) it seemed like there was a new name being rolled out every couple of weeks. I used to feel the same way about Kentucky Fried Chicken's change to KFC, but interestingly enough, it turns out they actually had a very 'good reason' for their abbreviation - and it wasn't to hide the fact that their food was fried - or to be more hip (as I'd always suspected :p) So they now get a pass!

The other day, I drove past one of my favourite Edmonton restaurants, the Sicilian Pasta Kitchen, and imagine my surprise disgust when I realized they'd rebranded to Sicilian PK or S.P.K. for short. WHAT!!! I'm certain they must have heard me howl as I went past. "I am so blogging this," I promised them, ha!

Pet peeves are purely subjective and don't always make a lot of sense to other people. For example (and I apologize in advance if you have one) but don't get me started on vanity plates for vehicles!

Ways to Enjoy Winter More, # 2

Debra's most amusing 'Crop Circle Fun!' on Thursday, reminded me that I've had this post in draft for a couple of weeks now. 

Complain if we must - but there's nothing quite like the sparkling beauty of a fresh snow. The above and following geometric marvels were created by artist Simon Beck, using of all things, a simple pair of snowshoes!

A friend emailed me these pics a few weeks ago and I was astounded by their intricacy.

Working up to 10 hours per day, each "Snow Quilt" is typically the size of three football fields;

and like their close cousin, the Crop Circle - they are best viewed from on high.

So fragile and fleeting... 

Simon first began crafting these wonders solely for the purpose of getting some exercise! His foot problems no longer allow him to run and he finds plodding about on level snow least painful.

Photographing them came next -- now he's considering buying a better camera. What an inspiration!

  

Happy New Year Everyone!

I have a confession to make: I'm a secret slob. If you saw me on the street, you'd likely think me well put together. My clothes would be clean and stylish, with no buttons missing or threads hanging. If you came over to my home and looked around, you'd find it very neat and well-ordered; a place for everything and everything in it's place. Same with my car. 

My purse however, is a completely different story... This is what my wallet looks like all year - and not because we just had Christmas. The only time I ever seem to empty it out is right before a trip.

Yesterday, while I was ruminating out loud about what my New Year's resolution should be (I also happened to be rummaging through my purse at the time), a voice from the peanut gallery (JJ Hubby) piped in with, "Why don't you start by cleaning your wallet..?" 

Truthfully, I'm not sure I would even want to resolve to keep my wallet clean - I kind of like it the way it is. If I need a coupon, an old receipt or list - I always know where to look. And granted, sometimes I have to search a little, but often I'm also rewarded by coming across something, maybe a stub from somewhere I've been and had forgotten all about. It's like an archeological dig!

I think instead of a resolution, I'm going to go with the 'Word of the Year' theme I've been seeing on so many blogs lately. A beacon of inspiration for 2013, so to speak. The word I've decided on is:

ACCEPTANCE

This year, I will try to be more accepting of myself: foibles, vices, weaknesses and all. Actually, so far, I'm finding this SO easy, I'm now wondering if maybe I should also work on accepting the weaknesses of those around me... No, on second thought, I think I'll save that one for 2014, lol!

Have you ever flown a red-eye? If so, it's certainly well named, isn't it! I've travelled through the night from Edmonton to Toronto on a number of occasions and it wasn't pretty :) On Dec 4th, these West Jet employees may have helped to brighten the arduous journey between Calgary and Toronto for 166 weary travellers.

Who's Naughty List Are You On?

Instead of attaching a Christmas letter in an email last week, casual friends mistakenly sent us their 'Christmas Card Register.' Turns out they meticulously keep a spreadsheet of who they've send out cards to (it dates all the way back to 2005) and who's responded in turn: be it via a card, email or a phone call; it's all noted in fine detail! 

To be honest, at first I wasn't sure what this Register was and once opened, I wasn't sure if I was somehow expected to update it... What was glaringly obvious though, was that we haven't been very consistent throughout the years - we're definitely sitting in their Naughty category!! 

I hate to be critical, but to me this type of list-keeping doesn't seem at all in keeping with the true generosity of the Season, so I couldn't resist: I sent it back and asked if they were working for Santa, hehe!

Some Christmas Cheer

The few times in my life that I've ridden the subway were not the most exciting on record... I really didn't enjoy the feeling of being herded into slots like cattle! I'm thankful I don't need to ride it on a daily basis like so many millions around the world. Judging by the smiles on their faces, this impromptu concert the other day must have helped brighten an otherwise dull transit for some Torontonians; many couldn't resist singing along :)

No Matter the Medium

I recently remembered it's almost a year now since Santa brought me a Kindle. At the time, I wondered how much I'd actually use it. Turns out, I read 6 books on it... not bad for a start - and I find myself using it more and more as time goes on. It's so light and portable, I even bring it in the tub with me - all safely enclosed in a zip-loc baggie :)

In fact, I just downloaded 'Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell' (which I am currently in the midst of re-reading) last night. 'Jonathan Strange' is a huge monstrosity and my arms simply refuse to take the weight of it again! - so in this instance, a reader is the perfect solution. I don't think I'll ever stop buying and reading actual books, I love the feel and smell of them too much, but once again, new technology has earned it's place in my life.

Botanical Cactus Gardens

On our trip to Vegas in August, we visited a Botanical Cactus Gardens, situated at the Ethel M. Chocolate Factory in Henderson, Nevada. These gardens are beautifully landscaped, with walking trails throughout. 

There are 300 types of cacti on a 3-acre parcel of land. 

I've only ever seen the miniature versions of some of these.

Here is my lovely daughter Caroline & her buddy Prickly Pete;

Caroline's an extrovert - she seems to make friends everywhere she goes, lol! 

I love cacti and succulents and only wish some of the rooms in my house received the proper sun-exposure, or I'd grow them myself. I do have quite a few 'Hens 'n Chicks' in my back yard though, and they have survived many a harsh winter - which always amazes me each spring.

Here's an interesting factoid I learned while putting this post together:

All cacti are succulents - but not all succulents are cacti... confused yet?

The Ethel M. Chocolate Factory, which we also toured, has a system in place, called a "Living Machine," where all the waste water from the factory is recycled into an on-site waste water treatment facility, and by using bacteria, snail, fish & algae (completely chemical free), 100% of the waters needed to maintain the gardens are generated. There are also ponds which attract and water the many birds which live in the gardens. You can just see the blue of one of these ponds directly behind this knoll.

This is me last night, just as I headed outside to shovel. It was -14C.

Let's see: skidoo boots, snow pants, down-filled parka, hood, face mask, Hot Paws mitts :)

I don't know about you, but I'd rather start out slightly overdressed and peel back layers 

as necessary - as it turned out, I only pulled back the hood. 

I'm not saying I did or I didn't, but a shovel full may or may not have landed on Dan's van...!!

I still can't believe I actually read the following two stories in the news last week:

"In an announcement Friday that seems better suited for a fairy tale, a North Korean state news agency reported that archaeologists recently reconfirmed the lair of a unicorn once ridden by an ancient Korean king.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, the lair of the mythical creature is located 200 meters (about 219 yards) from the Yongmyong Temple in Pyongyang. A rock that sits in front of the lair contains carvings that some believe date back to the period of the Koryo Kingdom, the outlet notes." (Source)

'Put garlic in your windows and crosses in your homes': Serbian council warns residents vampire is on the loose after his 'house' collapses

"Sales of garlic are booming in western Serbia today after the local council issued a public health warning that a vampire was on the loose. The official announcement came after an old ruined mill said to once have been the home of the country's most famous vampire collapsed.

Sava Savanovic was believed to have lived in the shack on the Rogacica river in Zarozje village in the municipality of Bajina Basta. It is said he drank the blood of anybody that came to mill their grain.

Local mayor Miodrag Vujetic admitted: 'People are worried, everybody knows the legend of this vampire and the thought that he is now homeless and looking for somewhere else and possibly other victims is terrifying people. We are all frightened.'

He added that it was all very well for people who didn't live in the area to laugh at their fears but he said nobody in the region was in any doubt that vampires do exist." (Source)

Viva Las Vegas, Part 3

December greetings! Have you got your tree up yet? I put mine up this week. I find I feel SO much more festive once I've decked the halls. I listened to my 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' cd while decorating and it was warm fuzzies all the way :) I find this album has a very cool New York jazzy feel to it -- I can't help but imagine I'm in a Nora Ephron or Woody Allen movie when I listen to jazz. 

Here's a bit of New York for you, Las Vegas style.

I quickly snapped this from the window of our tour bus as we drove by. 

Many modern iconic structures are immortalized on a smaller (yet still quite significant) scale. 

When we were in Vegas, I happened upon a vending machine that dispenses art. For $5, you receive a small original painting or photograph, all mounted and ready for hanging! 

Here's mine :) 

The colours are much richer than this photo demonstrates... it's hard to take a good photo of a photo.

I wish I had a pic of my daughter's - if I remember correctly, hers was a painting and the artist's name and email address were on a business card that was in the tiny cardboard box it came in. What a novel way for struggling artists to get some advertising and small commission.
