Just Do It!

"You are the force to be reckoned with"

"Think power and perfection"

"You are worth it"

After a six-week 'break', I finally started working out again. My litany of excuses was wearing thin (and my butt was getting soft) so on Wednesday I gave myself a good talking to and a swift kick! It felt great - and I'm once again left wondering why I avoid doing what I know from experience is good for me. When I'm exercising I'm a much happier, motivated person. The weird thing is that I can be very disciplined for months on end and then mysteriously fall off the wagon for a while. During those periods that I am motivated, I prefer to work out in the privacy of my own home and do a circuit of weight training (very important for women as they age), light cardio and pilates. I also try to go for a long walk every other day - but this doesn't always happen. The above quotes are Jari Love's (Get Ripped!) words of encouragement that I desperately cling to in my darkest moments :)  I have four of her dvd's and she's a huge inspiration. She's a Calgarian btw.

Do you exercise? What type? No, gardening doesn't count! How do you stay motivated?

Here's a very energetic episode of Whose Line Is It Anyway? with exercise guru Richard Simmons.
I love this show - thank goodness for re-runs.

Enjoy your weekend!

  1. Good for you, especially if it makes you feel better.I have never been a regular exerciser and I'm still using my broken toe as an excuse to stay that way!( even though that was months ago!) I used to go running, but one of my knees twinges too much. I have been thinking about pilates though...I said "thinking" Jane, so yes, I'll mull over the idea of pilates for a few months...

    1. I like pilates because it helps to build core strength - something I'm sorely lacking in.

  2. I am exactly like you, Jane. I exercise for months on end and then fall off the wagon for awhile. I'm not sure why this happens; perhaps I get tired of the strict routine and need a break. I also try to take long walks as often as possible. I usually do this in the evening with hubby, so it's a way to exercise and spend some quality time with my other half. By the way, gardening is considered a very good form of exercise, so if you spend time doing that, pat yourself on the back; it counts.

    1. Glad to know there's someone else out there with this pattern. Ok, I'll factor in all the bending and carrying etc. I do when gardening :)

  3. Ooh I can so relate to this... Right now, instead of "just doing it", I'm in decision mode. Pilates? Tai Chi? Yoga?

    1. I've never tried Tai Chi or Yoga myself - I'm sure they are great for building core strength.

  4. My slipped discs mean I am limited as to what I can do, nothing high impact. Having the dogs means I am forced to walk each day, and I try to go at a brisk pace and walk about 5 miles. I also do Pilates for core strength, well when I remember!!

    1. Hi Tracey, understandably you definitely have to be careful - walking is a great exercise - the most natural and enjoyable as well as far as I'm concerned.

  5. I spin. I have been spinning for many, many years and am now the oldest one in the class most days. I spin 3 times a week at the Y and it means I can eat anything I want. (important for a chocoholic.) I never fall off the wagon either. I guess I'm addicted because I get very stressed if I miss a class for some reason or another, ha ha!

    Enjoy your workouts!

    1. Hi Francie, I have no idea what 'spinning' is, believe it or not - I will be checking this out. Being able to eat what you want is a great incentive - I know it is for me :)

    1. I love their silliness and am always impressed with how quick they can improvise - I couldn't make up a song on the spot if I tried.

    1. I don't know how energetic I really am Dorothy - it's definitely something I have to push myself to do. I need to try Yoga - a lot of people swear by it.

  10. This was just what I needed. I really don't know why we put these things off, it really makes you feel 100 times better. This week I've been tired and had a cold and telling myself I'll do it tomorrow... after seeing this I think I really will do it tomorrow lol

  11. Jane,
I don't exercise a great deal and if I do it's ballet in the house :) Helps keep the muscles toned. I do a lot of running about it up and down my father's stairs and walking a good distance when I stay at his place. Exercise does make you feel good though.

    1. I had no idea you were into ballet - how lovely :) I'll bet it does help to keep the muscles toned and maintain core strength.
