You Really Can't Judge a Book By It's Cover

Isn't this just about the cutest book (& most intriguing title) you've ever seen? A few weeks ago, a friend lent it to me - I'd been with her when she purchased it and had waited impatiently for her to finish till I could get my greedy little paws on it! Thankfully she's a fast reader :) I was feeling quite excited as I drove home with it tucked in my purse, immediately made a cup of coffee and expectantly dove in... well, you guessed it: Disappointment - with a capital D. I won't go into my reasons for not even attempting to finish - tastes are so subjective - ironically though, the title, which first attracted me in the first place, perfectly sums up the whole experience, lol!

What was the last book you abandoned like a mouse rat from a sinking ship?

  1. I hate when that happens. I love Jo Nesbo books but the latest one The Bat was just dire. I tried to plough through it but it was so tediously life-draining that I had to toss it. I just didn't care. If life is short, I don't want to waste my time on boring books.

    1. I so agree - life is too short to waste on bad books. It's disappointing when an author you love writes a stinker - or when a series starts out good and then just goes downhill after the first couple of books.

  2. I can't even make it thru some of my favorite magazines anymore. Too many ads, articles that are boring, no new info... Other than drooling over turquoise, even Cowboys & Indians is on my list of don't buy anymore. For sure, my mags on Buddhism have simply gotten b o r i n g...

    1. I've been feeling the exact same way - bored - I wonder if we're suffering from information saturation...

  3. I know that feeling very well! The last book I abandoned like a rat on a sinking ship is The Shack by William P. Young. I picked it up because it was so popular, and ended up aggravated while reading it. I never finished it, and actually looked it up on Wikipedia to see how it ends :)

  4. I have a bad, bad habit of crapping out in the middle of books. They just can't keep my attention any more. It has to be an AMAZING book for me to finish it. I wonder if this has something to do with advancing age? Or perhaps I've developed ADD.

    1. Or, as I suggested to turquoisemoon, we're suffering from information saturation. Sometimes I feel that way when I'm surfing the net - haven't I seen all this before... !

  5. Definitely the Twilight Book. Saw it at the library one day and took it home - I had heard so much about the books and the movies. couldn't get through even the first few chapters. Tedious and poorly written was my humble opinion.

    1. I had exactly the same experience with this series - I only got a few chapters in and couldn't go on any further. Cringeworthy.

  6. Eragon. After the first two chapters I thought wow, all the excitement is in the movie. I'll just re-watch it instead.

    1. I'd heard this book series really sucked! Still love the premise though - and of course the cover.

  7. The Other Boleyn Girl. I belonged to a book club at the time and that book made me decide it was time to leave! Life is too short to read things we don't enjoy.

    1. Too bad it led to you leaving your book club - it must have been a real stinker. I'm only familiar with the movie - which I have yet to see - I hope it's better than the book. Makes you wonder how some books even make it to print - let alone the inspiration for a movie.

  8. I never have that problem. Maybe because the only books I read lately are written for 8 year old's! I find that some of the vintage children's books I come across are much more fascinating to me than the boring articles in most magazines.

  9. The cover of the book is simplistic and would draw me to read what the content was about, however it was simple in text as well...I can't recall not reading a book to the very end as yet, but always a first time.

  10. That too bad that this book was a big disappointment for you. I can't remember the last time I didn't finish a book. I'm quite picky about what I read and that usually means avoiding all the trendy, today's must read books. I also avoid most historical fiction, because as a trained history instructor, I can't stand inaccuracies!!
