A Last Look

You know I've been saving this one :)

Above is a Baobab Tree. Known as the Tree of Life, they are native to Madagascar, Africa and Australia, and have been carbon-dated up to 6,000 years old. This one in Zambia has been installed with a long drop toilet, but they can grow so large that one in Limpopo province, south Africa has been hollowed out (the tree itself measures 154 feet in circumference) and turned into the world's first pub in a tree, The Big Baobab Bar.

Is it just me, or do they look a little young to be in a bar!

With January turning to February, our month-long look at the tree and some of the art it's inspired has come to an end. In actuality, I will more than likely continue to post quite regularly on the tree and nature in general - it's been a continuing theme here all along.

Did you know today is Escape Day? A favourite quick escape of mine is to listen to a podcast of Coast to Coast while taking a hot bath. I find conspiracy theories, alien abductions and bigfoot sightings very relaxing, lol! What's one of yours?

  1. A bar in a tree - that's one tree I'd be hugging a lot! A quick escape for me is to lose myself in a book and then have a refreshing nap (and no, I am not 85!)

    1. I'm not surprised you like your naps, Sulky Kitten! (I'm also betting you're older than 85... in cat years :)

  2. Amazing! I love these tree posts; they're so interesting. (And yes, those 'boys' look a little young to be hanging around there :)

I like to lose myself in a good book and hot bath. Or a good book on the couch that includes dozing off for an hour or so. And I also enjoy a good book as I lie down on the swing in the backyard while the birds sing around me, which may also include some dozing off. I guess it's the good book that's the main theme here. And if a nap is included, I'm in heaven :)

    1. Martha, You sound like you have a bit of cat in you :) Books are an amazing escape - that's probably why I like sci-fi/fantasy so much.

  3. Trees up to 6000 years old and what does mankind think to do with them, why let's put a bar in one, and perhaps, yes...a toilet in another one!
    Beam me up, Scotty!

And I escape in books AND blogland!

    1. Kay, I know what you mean - I thought it was neat and kind of disrespectful all at the same time.

  5. Movie marathons for me. Planet of the Apes, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Lord of the Rings, etc.

The tree reminded me of The House on the Rock where many of the rooms where carved out of mountain stone.

    1. Movies are another great escape - and like yourself, I tend towards the sci-fi/fantasy movies: true escapism :)
I checked out The House on the Rock! What an amazing place.

  6. HI JANE - I love, love, love the tree house. Amazing. I have been in some in California at the Redwood Forest. I loved it. And I love the 'dog escape' "yay" for freedom!
    Love Gail

    1. I have made it to California, but not the Redwood Forest - hopefully someday. The pics I've seen are incredible. Bill the dog will not be contained! - I had no idea a dog could jump that high.

  7. Jane, you are Miss Encyclopedia, for sure! Who else, would find valuable information, like the 6,000 year old tree in Africa, with a bar? I would love to see that in person, but for now, the photo will suffice!
Love it...thanks for sharing! That dog is sure a smart one:DDD

    1. Elisabeth, Haha, My husband makes that joke quite often. He says he threw his encyclopedias away years ago, lol! I'm glad you enjoyed it - I saved these last two trees for the grand finale :)

  8. Good Morning To All, Imagine being able to go and actually see all these wonderful sights. Trees are so interesting, I'm a bit sad this series is coming to a close.

Love the dog escape clip. See, if you first don't succeed, try, try again!

    Good blogging Jane.

Clues please, what have you in store for us next month????

  10. Your wood art theme has been fantastic! And I happy to hear that you won't be abandoning trees entirely! I would have a heart attack if I thought Duffy would be leaping over our fences! Mind you, he isn't confined in a small space like that--he has most of the back yard to roam around in. I escape into books, gardening, and sitting outside with my dog.

    1. Dianne, I guess we can't blame poor Bill for wanting to escape. I think a dog that size needs to have a good-sized area to freely roam in. We used to live on an acreage and had always had two big dogs who came and went as they pleased - they didn't go far in actuality.

  11. If God had meant trees to have toilets ... oh never mind. Ha ha. Loved the doggy escape too!! AND I must admit that Coast to Coast is what I listen to in the middle of the night when I can't sleep. I don't like the ones about evil spirits so I always hope they have something more positive on tap. (On tap?? Still thinking about those trees!)

    1. Francie, It sure caught my attention when I stumbled across it. Not sure what I think - as I had said to Kay, it's kind of cool in some ways and disrespectful in others. Glad to meet another Coastie - I listen in the middle of the night when I can't sleep either. The sound of George's voice in particular soon puts me to sleep. Lots of strange subjects, but I love it (addicted actually) and like to feel I have also learnt a lot about science and space.

    1. I'd love to - provided it had all the amenities of home... which I doubt is possible, unless it was a tree house - some of those are amazing... hmmm, perhaps a future post I think :)

  14. Czego to też ludzie nie wymyślą, pub w drzewie. Może to i ciekawe, ale czy temu wspaniałemu drzewu nie zaszkodzi, mam wątpliwości. * Mam nadzieję, że piesek wraca po takich ucieczkach . Pozdrawiam. *** What is it people do not come up, pub in the tree. Maybe it's interesting, but whether this wonderful tree will not hurt, I have doubts. * I hope the dog comes back after such escapes. Yours.
