It's mine I tell you, all mine ... whatever 'It' is lol!
I first spotted this little metal statuette at a flea market in Brantford, Ontario in March. I loved it immediately, but you can't buy everything you love (ha) I reminded myself and walked away. A few days after returning home I regretted that decision. I have no explanation as to why I wanted needed this ridiculous item, but my mom thankfully agreed to pick it up for me the next day. I don't think there was any real danger it had already been purchased, but I'll admit that at the time I was worried! I transported it back with me on Tuesday - a lovely addition to my office. If you recognize this weird knick-knack, please let me know.
Cute in an odd kind of way. Sometimes we like something unusual without really understanding what the appeal is.
ReplyDeleteHi Martha, I know - one man's junk as they say. I'd just like to know what the story behind it is.
ReplyDeleteSomeone, somewhere knows the story on these two characters. Very unique
ReplyDeleterather old looking.
Hi Lorene, It has no markings of any kind. I hope to eventually find out something about it.
ReplyDeleteI know EXACTLY what this is!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is Crocodile Gena and Cheburashka - a mythical creature that looks kind of like a monkey crossed with bear cub.
They are characters from a children's book in Russia and have entered very deeply into the popular culture, with cartoons books, etc.
It's the weirdest little statue to see and pickup, and I'm just dazzled that I know what they are and how they spoke to you for some reason. :)

And now I wonder if it's a holdover from the Soviet times, or a more current little statue?
ReplyDeleteHi Tatiana, You have no idea how thrilled I am to have this mystery solved!! I have looked on the net quite extensively (or at least I thought I had) since first finding it and now that I know the character's names, I see they are all over books etc. - the exact statue (the base is such an odd shape) is on e-bay. I plan to do a post about this on Sunday. Thank you sooo much :)
ReplyDeleteI look forward to your post about these characters. This statuette is so odd it's definitely a must have!
ReplyDeleteHi Tricky Nag, Tune in on Sunday :)
ReplyDeletefyi: I am practically giddy about this turn of events... I really must get out more!
Wow, Tatiana, amazing! It's awesome that this little statue has such a cool story to it. I'll definitely pop by on Sunday for the post, Jane.
ReplyDeleteI am rather excited too - it's not often such esoteric knowledge comes in handy, and it's just such an unexpected thing. I LOVED the books as a child, and still remember the beginning of Cheburashka's arrival in a crate of oranges. There were no more oranges but a very full little animal who promptly fell over... I wonder if the translations are available in English? If not, I may have to do one!
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting to learn these characters names and some background about them.
ReplyDeleteAnd now you know.........the rest of the story!!
Hi Tatiana, I believe we all have "useless invaluable information" tucked away. I'm just glad yours came in handy lol! It's a darling tale. You may just need to do a translation - I would find that quite interesting.
ReplyDeleteHi Lorene, I didn't expect to find out this quickly, although, if you recall, I did have a pic of this statuette posted along my sidebar all of April and part of May with a note asking for info. Check back Sunday for the full expose!
ReplyDeleteHi Martha, I never would have envisioned it would have such an interesting background :)
