"Get Real, Barbie"

The Scary Reality of a Real-Life Barbie Doll!

I stumbled across an interesting article the other day in The Huffington Post. This larger than life Barbie was built by Galia Slayen in an effort to raise awareness amongst her highschool peers about eating disorders and body image issues.

"Get Real, Barbie" statistics:

• If Barbie were an actual women, she would be 5'9" tall, have a 39" bust, an 18" waist, 33" hips and a size 3 shoe.
• Barbie calls this a "full figure" and likes her weight at 110 lbs.
• At 5'9" tall and weighing 110 lbs, Barbie would have a BMI of 16.24 and fit the weight criteria for anorexia. She likely would not menstruate.
• If Barbie was a real woman, she'd have to walk on all fours due to her proportions.
• Slumber Party Barbie was introduced in 1965 and came with a bathroom scale permanently set at 110 lbs with a book entitled "How to Lose Weight" with directions inside stating simply "Don't eat."

A great big Thanks to Elisabeth from Food and Thrift Finds for the beautiful Lenox candy dish
I received in the mail on Tuesday. I was the lucky winner of the giveaway she held a few weeks ago.

It's really lovely, in mint condition and the creamy finish is pearlized.)

Thanks again, Elisabeth!! I'm certain I will treasure this candy dish for many years.

Also, here's the cute box it was snugly tucked into.
Say Cheese, Emma!

  1. What a lovely win, congratulations.
It is incredible just how hideous full size Barbie looks, a complete freak! Yet there are silly women who try to be like her.

  2. They should change her name to Barbierexia. Congrats on winning that little bowl, it's lovely. So is the box - I have a "thing" for cute boxes and tins...I'm sure if I lived by myself I'd be one of those mad Hoarders!

  3. That is a great win, Jane! Congratulations. I hope you fill it up with lots of goodies. I really love the box. I've been into pretty boxes lately, using them to store and hold all kinds of things. Yes, Barbie would be pretty scary looking if she was a real person!

  4. Oh, I love the dish and I love the photo with the shadowy hearts! And I love that box too!
I have never been a fan of Barbie, even when I was a kid. That's funny that someone showed what she would look like in real life human terms!

  5. Hi Jane, when I just notice the "life size Barbie"...I smile to myself; How true! This is the example of what girls have to look like today?...then, scrolling down, I noticed the beautiful little Lenox dish. Such beautiful photos you took of them. I'm so happy that you won the giveaway, and I was able to ship it out to you all "snuggly" in my sturdy little photo box wrapped in bubble wrap.
Thank you for featuring the sweet little bowl, and I know you will enjoy it throughout the years!

  6. That's a really lovely dish! I actually always knew this about Barbie... it would be pretty much impossible for a woman to survive if she was like that and she'd certainly have a lot of breathing difficulties if she could live.

  7. Barbie in real life.....yikes! Very unnatural, almost goolish looking and absolutely unrealistic. What a false view she has been to millions of girls over the years, nice to see this exposed for what it is......a big marketing ploy at the expense of women and girls.

I do love that charming little bowl, how lovely. I can see chocolates sitting in it, in my minds eye....lol A very lovely prize for Jane, thank you Elizabeth.

Yes, I'm into unique little boxes and tins also, wonder why we find them so enchanting?

  9. I love the Barbie! I'd heard about her crazy proportions if she were a real person, but it's all together different to actually see it.
