1950 as Envisioned in 1925

"Doc, we better back up. We don't have enough road to get up to 88.
Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads."
~ Back to the Future ~

I stumbled across this a few weeks ago in my travels.
Expand it for a closer look. I think it's fascinating!

Jane, where do you find these things. I love this - it's the kind of thing i can stare at for ever. I love lots of details and it's very clever. I think it's a brilliant idea for what we term as "inner cities" areas.

That is incredible. I ran across some quotes from Popular Science recently; they had some odd predictions, it seems. I love that quote from 'Back to the Future'. That is such a fun movie!

  3. There were approximately 2 Billion people on the planet at that time. It jumped to 2 1/2 billion by 1950. We're now at 7 billion. I'm sure they couldn't imagine this many people.

  6. 1925? Looking forward to 1950? Amazing. The only thing they left out were the bomb shelters and air raid sirens - but then in 1925 they's already had the war to end all wars, hadn't they? Fascinating!

    1. Hi Francie, I find stuff like this so intriguing. I guess they were hoping against hope for better times.

  7. When I was a kid in the the sixties's a lot of movies and magazine were about the future. It's not so much like that any more. I can remember some of those scared me and others excited me.

    1. Yes, I also remember the conveniences they imagined we'd be using by now; we haven't entered the Jetson age quite yet though!

  8. A couple things that struck me as odd: There are people in the middle of two sides of fast moving traffic. How are they crossing the street? Secondly I wonder if these are electric cars because that would be a lot of emissions contained underground. The schools I think are a neat touch. It would be very convenient to have schools where you worked but I would have hated being at a school that long! lol

    1. I know what you mean - I don't see where they can safely cross. As well, I was thinking that the cars and trucks still look very old-fashioned. I know this was 1925, but you'd think they could have envisioned more stream-lined vehicles for their future.

  9. Can you imagine what that'd be like? I like the idea of the traffic underground.
Sometimes Durell and I will see something and wonder what the people before us would have thought of it. And then sometimes, we'll see something and be completely amazed, we're living in the future they imagined and invented...so cool.

    1. Lael, I also love the idea of traffic underground. I can only imagine what they'd think if they came back and realized we can now talk to anyone on the globe instantaneously - and send them a 'talking picture'!

  10. It is amazing and hideous at the same time. I couldn't live like that, I feel claustrophobic just looking at it!

  11. Imagine this was the vision seen in 1925 for 1950! What a really interesting picture this is, so much detail in it.

The Congestion Problem is still with us in most large cities in North America. Just go to Toronto for a day and try to park you car with out paying an arm and a leg.

  13. Fascinating to see what they envisioned - I'm thinking of posting a few more that predict even further into the future.
