The (Big) Kid in Me

A teeny-tiny vignette from one of two terrariums I will eventually get around to showing you.
You may recall I made a total of four last summer and had profiled two at the time. Here & here.

I was recently given the Leibster award by Rachael over at Letters from a Mermaid. Although I do appreciate it, I'm not going to follow through on all the requirements of the award - instead I thought I'd just share one random secret about myself with you:

I'm still a big kid!
(and suspect many of you are as well :)

To get myself through the winter, I tend to read and watch a lot of movies. After sci-fi and fantasy, my favourite genre is the Children/Young Adults section. Whenever I find myself at Goodwill (which is quite often) a certain portion of my time there is spent perusing the kid's books.

I've either recently read, am reading or plan to read the above.

I've watched these movies in the past few weeks and each was a visual delight.

I think it's important remain childlike (though not childish ;) throughout our lives. Children's literature and movies help me to stay in touch with the magical, whimsical and fantastical possibilities in life as seen through more innocent, wondering eyes.

Your betrayed the secret is very nice, as well as books and movies. Yours.

    1. I've been hearing for years that this book series is excellent, so thought I'd better grab the set when I saw it at Goodwill.

  4. Oh Jane, I am a big kid too! I LOVE children's books so much, you would not believe it. My secret ambition is to write a book for children that would be cherished and loved by many generations. There, don't tell anybody!!
And I love children's movies too, but only the very best ones, like the ones from PIXAR. I haven't seen Tintin yet, but it looks right up my alley.

    1. Oh don't I know it, Kay :) I suspect you and I have very similar tastes in just about everything. You need to start that book, the sooner the better. That way you'll still be around to enjoy all the accolades :)

  7. Very interesting picture of the terrarium and the back ground lighting is really mysterious looking.

Children's movies interest me also, especially Disney movies. They are just plain fun and relaxing to watch. I may look into the Water Horse, I have not watched it.

Somewhere in each of us, there is that hidden child, that is craving some good fun and laughter.

I agree, Disney movies are wonderful. You can watch The Water Horse on Netflix if you have it.

  8. That's a beautiful terrarium!

I secretly love reading children's books. My five-year-old is just getting interested in chapter books, and I'm having a great time reading them to him. :)

  9. The Children/Young Adults genre is definitely a favourite of mine, so I understand comepletely where you're coming from! I often pick up books from this genre because I enjoy it so much. I have a small collection that I hope to share/read with grandchildren one day (if I have any...hopefully...)

I love that terrarium! It takes imagination and patience to put something like that together, never mind talent. I can't wait to see more. Show us!

    1. Starting a collection is a great idea, Martha. I quite often see gorgeous picture books - still have The Velveteen Rabbit and Zoom the Cat ones I read to my kids, but I should make a point of picking them up as I see them. Never know when we'll have little ones to read to again :)

  10. Before I know it I'll have kids of my own (nothing planned or coming at the moment) and by Sept I'll have 4 nephews/nieces. It's good to be a big kid at heart, cause I'll be watching stuff like it whether I like it or not with them.

    1. Yes, I still remember your terrarium with the Buddha - gorgeous and most serene :) You are lucky - you have the perfect 'excuse' to go see all of these great movies on the big screen.

  12. O wow, your terrarium is lovely -- so serene and atmospheric and wistful. You might perhaps be interested in reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, and also the Gormenghast novels; they're not exactly for kids, but they do have that magical, childlike, imaginative quality.

    1. Thank you so much :) I only started making them this past summer at the encouragement of my daughter - who'd caught the 'bug' that same spring. They are fairly low maintenance and really beautify a room. I've read Jonathan Strange twice - loved it! I will definitely look up the Gormenghast novels now - I always appreciate book recommendations.

  13. Does watching kid's cartoons count? I'm rather found of Adventure Time.

  14. You have fun watching the movies. I think there is a lot of being a child in all of us, some of us let it out and others don't.

  15. And its been proven that living that way, gives you a longer fuller healthier life too.

  16. HI JANE - great post - and wonderful unique and special things about you. I too am a big kid - and the kid in me actually has a name "Annie". Long story - if you cane to go over to my blog and type in the search area "The Kid In Me' you will get a feel for how "Annie" was reborn. That part of me, once denied is now and has been for a long time my greatest strength. Thanks for a great post.
    Love Gail/Annie <3

  17. Oh Jane! I forgot about the book - The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie and how much I enjoyed it. A good children's book is a real treasure and sometimes very comforting (maybe not that one, ha ha). Being a big kid is a good thing!!! And congrats on your well deserved award!

  18. Your terrariums are amazing and anyone who has the patience to do such lovely work in such tiny spaces, has my respect and admiration!! I don't think I have any big kid in me, although I do like to be silly from time to time.I do appreciate that there are children's books that cross the age gap and the generations and are always timeless and classic. Today is a very good day to stay in doors and read!!

    1. Hi Dianne, Thanks a bunch :) I don't know how patient I am, but I managed somehow! I'm hoping to put together a Hobbit-themed one at some point this spring, once the greenhouses start getting in fresh stock. You're right about staying in today. Once I found out it was -29, I changed any plans I had of going out!!

  21. The terrarium's lovely. It reminds me of my 'freshly caught fairy folk' jars who have to be kept in the jar or they'll wreak all kinds of mischief! I keep thinking I should give them a bigger home though and one of these would be lovely. We also like watching 'children's' films: 2 of our favourites are Inkheart and Stardust x
