  11. Oh, I didn't realize that the End of the World was tied to the moment of the Winter Solstice. I thought it could come at any time during the full day of December 21st. Still lots of time to worry!

  13. Very cute!!! Just for interest, there's an article in the November/December issue of Archaeology, titled "The Maya Sense of Time". It presents information that shows that while the one cycle of of time (the Long Count) is ending, there are many other cycles that will continue. There are so many calendars within calendars in the Mayan system and I think people don't realize that. Tellingly, the modern day Mayans of Guatemala, who still have "Daykeepers" who maintain the 260 day ritual calendar, find it strange that people think some sort of apocalyse is going to happen (and actually it would be on December 23, because the modern calendar has shifted 2 days later than the ancient one). They believe the world dies each day when the suns sets and also when the crops are harvested. In other words the world is constantly dying and it's the "Daykeeper's" job to make sure things get going again.

    1. Well, thank goodness for the Daykeepers :) Thanks for this Dianne, very intriguing history and I hope all my visitors take the time to read your comments. I had heard something about the Mayans finding all this fear mongering very strange.

We were just chuckling here that it looks like I'm going to have to cook that turkey after all...!

  15. I usually have dessert first, anyway, but since the world didn't end today, I have to now actually make plans for the weekend.
